The lyrics to “Not Just a Word” were written by band member Anthony Thogmartin, with inspirations stemming from his newfound fatherhood. “ 'Not Just a Word' is indeed a love song, but not in the traditional sense,” says Thogmartin. “Contrary to the prevailing sense of romantic love, NJAW provides a counter narrative to the self centered and self serving lens we view love from in popular culture. “From the perspective of a new father (water seeds and watch them grow) the self diminishes and what is there instead is an overwhelming sense of service and patience. From the perspective of a new romantic relationship (all in time, can't make it happen any faster) tells the non-intuitive tale of how any lasting romance thrives in a space where it isn't forced.”
